Project #793.....or #25 for today
"Project #793.....or #25 for today".......These were the last words that my step-father wrote in his 'diary of engineering activities' ...as I fill in the 'blanks' for my semi-biographical rambles, incorporating them into a 'book outline'........there was a 'blank' period, when...living in an Airstream Trailer, in Warner Robbins, Georgia, that I was not as 'connected' to my past Life, or to my family.....It was before mobile phones and computer e-mailing....I didn't even have a phone...at all.....Isolated....So, I've been reconstructing bits and pieces...from the stacks of paper and photos that I've been lugging around for decades......This scan is of the last entry in Tom's 'diary'.....wherein, trapped in Valentine, Nebraska, away from all of his friends and family, he made detailed entries of mundane things.....always, the date, temperature and weather conditions and 'what was happening' during the construction of a big highway that he was 'engineering' and supervising the construction of.......After his critical assessment of the increasingly crappy job that was being done, with increasingly inferior materials.....he was 'transferred' to Arizona for another 'Project'.....The Bridge that was being built, and which he was observing to be of sub-standard quality......later collapsed, killing and injuring several 'workers'........."Contractual 'Gov't Work'"......And this brings me to the 'Present'.....Hmmm......
